Zevachim Chapter 14, Mishnah 8. We continue with the historical narrative unfolding before us in the previous mishnayos, and this is the final mishnah in the series.

"Ba'u l'Yerushalayim" - when they came to Jerusalem:

Ultimately, the Mishkan moved to Jerusalem, and the Beis HaMikdash was built - a permanent structure with a solid roof, which no longer wandered from its place, built by King Solomon. The Aron was also returned to its place. King Solomon began the construction in the fourth year of his reign, and the building was completed in the eleventh year, meaning after seven years. "When they came to Jerusalem" means, therefore, that the Beis HaMikdash was built and completed.

"Ne'esru habamos, velo hayah lahem od heter" - the bamos became forbidden, and they never again had permission:

From that stage, the bamos were forbidden again, and not only that, but they were never permitted again. After Jerusalem, bamos are not permitted at all. As mentioned earlier, non-Jews are permitted to offer sacrifices on bamos even in our days, but Jews are not permitted to do so.

"Vehaysah nachalah" - and it became the inheritance:

This is the meaning of the word "nachalah" (inheritance) in the verse, which was also mentioned earlier. Moshe Rabbeinu says, "For you have not yet come to the resting place and to the inheritance":

  • "Hamenuchah" - Shiloh, a place of rest.

  • "Vehanachalah" - the place of the permanent inheritance, Jerusalem, which is a permanent place like an inheritance that stands forever.

Jerusalem continues forever, and there is no other possibility.

"Kodashim kalim ne'echalim lifnim min hakla'im" - kodashim kalim are eaten within the curtains:

As was stated in the four previous mishnayos, kodashim kalim are eaten within the curtains, literally. However, in the Beis HaMikdash there were no curtains at all: it was not a courtyard of tapestries, but an azarah surrounded by walls. Even though the Beis HaMikdash of King Solomon was much more modest than the one we learn about in Tractate Middos - the Beis HaMikdash built by Herod many, many years later - the mishnah used the expression "within the curtains" here merely for the sake of memory, since that is what was said in the four other mishnayos. The use of the same term makes it easier to remember and review the mishnayos by heart, but in reality, there were no tapestries there, only walls.

"Uma'aser sheni lifnim min hachomah" - and ma'aser sheni is eaten within the wall:

The place for eating kodashim kalim - of all the types brought to Jerusalem - and of ma'aser sheni, is within the walls of Jerusalem itself. And so it is stated (Devarim 14:23): "And you shall eat before Hashem, your God, in the place which He shall choose to rest His Name there, the tithe of your grain, your wine, and your oil" - the ma'aser sheni must be eaten there, within the walls of Jerusalem.

This is the halachah even nowadays. During the years of the First Temple and Second Temple this is how things were conducted, and even today, one who is about to eat ma'aser sheni - his eating must be within the walls of Jerusalem. And as the sage Ovadiah noted, certainly when we merit to bring the sacrifices of the Beis HaMikdash, they will be brought and eaten within the walls of Jerusalem.

With this, the series of Mishnayos dealing with the progression of the locations of sacrifice and eating concludes, from the Mishkan in the desert until the eternal establishment of Jerusalem.
