Shabbos Chapter 9, Mishnah 5: Shiurim for Hotza'ah

Chavrusa Learning

Shabbos, Chapter 9, Mishnah 5. This mishnah returns to the laws of carrying out and transporting on Shabbos, and deals with the measures - the quantities whose removal makes a person liable.

"HaMotzi eitzim - kedei levashel beitzah kalah":

One who carries wood out from a private domain to a public domain - how much wood must he carry out for the act to be significant enough to make him liable? The mishnah rules: the measure is enough wood to cook, as fuel, an easily cooked egg.

What is a "beitzah kalah", an easily cooked egg? It is the egg that cooks fastest, namely the chicken egg that we are accustomed to eating. And as we mentioned in the previous chapter, the reference is to a beaten egg placed in a hot pan, and the measure is the amount of time it would take to cook the volume of a dried fig from it - for that measure one is liable.

"Tavlin - kedei letabel beitzah kalah":

The measure for spices is enough to season an easily cooked egg like the one just mentioned. And the mishnah adds: "mitztaref zeh im zeh" - the different kinds of spices combine with one another to make up the measure, and it need not be one single spice, but even several different kinds together.

The dyeing materials:

  • "Kelipei egozim" - the shells of nuts.

  • "Kelipei rimonim" - the peels of pomegranates.

  • "Istis u'fuah" - two kinds of plants used for dyeing: istis produces a bluish shade, and fuah a reddish shade.

All of these items are used for dyeing, and their measure is: "kedei litzboa bahen beged katan b'sivchah" - an amount sufficient to dye the smallest piece of cloth in a hairnet. The sivchah is a woven head covering that a woman would customarily wear on her head, and that small garment was a tiny piece of woven material sewn onto the very top of the head covering. It is enough that the dye be able to color this small item on the head covering.

The cleaning materials:

  • "Mei raglayim" - urine, which was also used as a cleaning agent.

  • "Neter u'borit" - two cleaning agents.

  • "Kimonya" - a type of chalk used for cleaning.

  • "Ashlag" - another cleaning agent.

The measure for all of these cleaning materials is: "kedei lechabes bahen beged katan b'sivchah". If regarding the dyeing materials the measure was enough to dye that small piece of cloth on the head covering, here the measure is enough to launder and clean that very same small piece of cloth.

Rabbi Yehudah's measure:

Rabbi Yehudah gives a different measure for the quantity of cleaning materials, saying that it is "kedei leha'avir al haketem" - an amount sufficient to launder a stain, the stain of a niddah. These cleaning agents were used to determine whether what we have before us is really menstrual blood, or perhaps dye or something similar.

The mishnah in Maseches Niddah lists seven kinds of cleaning agents that were used to launder the stain, in order to clarify whether its source was actual blood or some other coloring substance. Five of the materials mentioned in our mishnah - urine, neter, borit, kimonya and ashlag - are among those seven listed in the mishnah in Niddah.

In summary: in this mishnah we learned the measures for carrying out on Shabbos: wood - enough to cook an easily cooked egg; spices - enough to season an easily cooked egg, and the various kinds combine with one another; the dyeing materials (nut shells, pomegranate peels, istis and fuah) - enough to dye the small garment on a hairnet; and the cleaning materials (urine, neter, borit, kimonya and ashlag) - enough to launder that same small garment, and according to Rabbi Yehudah, enough to apply to a stain.
