Bikkurim, Chapter 1, Mishnah 9. At the close of Mishnah 8 we mentioned that the responsibility for bringing the bikkurim rests on the one who brings them - as we will see below, to the Temple Mount or to the Azarah. Our Mishnah clarifies the source from which this law is derived.
Responsibility Until the Temple Mount:
The Mishnah asks: from where do we know that a person bears the responsibility to see to it that his bikkurim reach the Beis HaMikdash, until he brings them to the Temple Mount? From the verse: "Reishis bikurei admascha tavi beis Hashem" - from here we learn that a person is responsible for them until they arrive at the Temple Mount.
The Temple Mount or the Azarah?
Although the Mishnah takes the Temple Mount as the criterion, there is an opinion that the Temple Mount is not the determining point, but rather the Azarah. Indeed, as we mentioned in the previous Mishnah, the case discussed there was one in which the bikkurim became tamei in the Azarah and not on the Temple Mount, because the bikkurim must reach the Azarah itself.
Bringing an Additional Species:
The Mishnah concludes with a further law: a person who brought one species from the produce of his field and recited the declaration of bikkurim over it, and then brought another species - he is obligated to bring it, for there is an obligation to bring bikkurim from each and every species. If he brought from the grapes, he must also bring from the figs and from the dates. But he does not repeat the declaration when he brings the second species.
This law is derived from the verse "Higadti hayom" - from the expression "I have declared today," which is one of the statements said in the declaration of bikkurim, we learn that the declaration is said once and not twice. It emerges that even though there is an obligation to bring the second species, there is no obligation to recite the declaration of bikkurim over it again.
In summary: in this Mishnah we learned that responsibility for the bikkurim rests upon their owner until he brings them to the Temple Mount, as derived from the verse "Reishis bikurei admascha tavi beis Hashem," and according to another opinion until they reach the Azarah. We also learned that the obligation to bring applies to each and every species, but the declaration is recited only once, as derived from "Higadti hayom."
