Tanya: on this day one begins chapter 12 in Shaar HaYichud VehaEmunah, from the beginning of the chapter, from the word "rak," and the lesson concludes on page 178 with the word "atzman."
The daily saying, a short adage, is taken from a letter that the Rebbe Rayatz wrote on the 3rd of Chanukah 5702. The Rebbe Rayatz wrote it when he was already in the United States, and addressed it to a woman who also lived in the United States. Apparently there was then a fear that the World War would spread there as well, in addition to the fact that many Jewish soldiers — and apparently also the children of that woman — were at the front, and fears about the future were mounting. The woman shared her feelings with the Rebbe in a letter.
The Rebbe replies to her in a letter, writing that indeed this is a difficult period, and that many merits are needed so that the Holy One, blessed be He, should protect all the residents of the place, and also this country, from anything bad. But we are Jews, and we must not be confused and lost; the Guardian of Israel will watch over us and over our children and grant us salvation. However, he adds, in order to merit this salvation — and the principal salvation, which is the redemption through Mashiach — one must heed the words of the Gemara, which states that those who engage in upholding the Torah and support those who study it are protected and saved from all events.
The quotation from which the daily saying is drawn follows: "Parents in Israel who require special deliverance and salvation for their children." According to its plain meaning, the letter refers to those whose children are at the front and who require salvation on their behalf.
Over the years, the Rebbe responded in one of the "maanos" that although the plain meaning of the letter relates to the specific problem about which the woman wrote, yet, following the citation of the saying in the Hayom Yom, the meaning of the salvation is far broader, and applies to any matter in which salvation is needed, for anyone who requires salvation on behalf of their children.
And what is the most reliable means to bring success? "The reliable means for this is supporting those who study Torah." Supporting those who study Torah is the best protection for saving children from all undesirable matters.
And the connection between this saying and the sequence of the Rambam's "Yad HaChazakah": we are here, according to the order of the hints, in the halachos of the book "Kinyan," and the daily saying corresponds to Hilchos Shecheinim (the laws of neighbors). What is the connection to Hilchos Shecheinim? At the conclusion of Hilchos Shecheinim in the Rambam, at the end of chapter 14, the Rambam brings a halachah: a person who wishes to sell his land, and two people come to buy it — one his neighbor, and the second a talmid chacham — he must sell to the talmid chacham before his neighbor. And even if his relative comes and a talmid chacham comes, he must sell first to the talmid chacham. This is the important thing according to the Torah, and it is what brings the greatest assistance.
