We are in the twenty-second lesson in the chain of lineage, in the eighth part on the life story of Rabbi the Tzemach Tzedek. We are learning about the sons and grandsons of Rabbi the Tzemach Tzedek. Now we will learn about the descendants of the third son of Rabbi the Tzemach Tzedek. Gimmel, who was the third son, about whom we already told earlier? His honorable holiness the Rebbe Rabbi Chaim Shneur Zalman of Liadi. After the passing of his father he was the Rebbe in Liadi.
Now let us tell about his descendants. He had an only son, the honorable holy Admor Rabbi Yitzchak Dov Ber of Liadi. His son was born in the year 5577 (1817), and passed away on the 20th of Nissan 5670 (1910). He was very connected to his grandfather, to the Rebbe the Tzemach Tzedek. After the passing of his grandfather, the Rebbe the Tzemach Tzedek, he moved together with his father to live in Liadi. His father, as mentioned, was Admor there, and after his father passed away, he filled the place of his father. He was Admor in Liadi for a period of thirty years.
At that time his brother-in-law was also a Rebbe. That is, after his father passed away, his brother-in-law took part of the chassidim, as we will mention him shortly, and after they passed away there was no longer any continuation to Chabad Liadi. It ended with them.
He himself, Rabbi Yitzchak Dov Ber, had three sons. The first, the chassidic Rav, Reb Shalom Shachna of Liadi, who also lived in Liadi with his father and grandfather. The second, the illustrious Rav, Rabbi Yehuda Leib, who was the head of the beis din in Homel, in Siracin, and in Vitebsk. The third son, Rabbi Baruch, who was a merchant in Smolensk. These were the sons of the Rebbe, Rabbi Yitzchak Dov Ber.
The son-in-law of Rabbi Chaim Shneur Zalman, the son of the Rebbe the Tzemach Tzedek, was the holy Rabbi Levi Yitzchak. As we said earlier, he was the successor of his father-in-law. He himself was among the descendants of the Rebbes of Radzimin, and for twenty-five years he filled the place of his father-in-law, and he served as a Rebbe together with his brother-in-law. His brother-in-law, Rabbi Yitzchak Dober, was a Rebbe, and Rabbi Levi Yitzchak too was a Rebbe. After some years, in the year 5642, he moved to the town of Siratin, and therefore he is noted under the name Siratin, the place to which he moved afterward.
The last thing we note is his books. In simple terms, whose books? The books of Rabbi Yitzchak DovBer. Even though this is stated under Rabbi Chaim Shneur Zalman, because in truth, as we will see in the content of the matters in the book, they were written by the Rebbe Rabbi Yitzchak DovBer, but from the teachings of the father. What is his book? "Siddur MaHaRID." First of all, what does the acronym MaHaRID stand for? MaHaRID is his name, Moreinu HaRav Yitzchak DovBer. The book is essentially a siddur with an explanation of the words according to Chassidus. The contents of the book were gathered from the writings of the Alter Rebbe, the Mitteler Rebbe, and from what he heard from his father, the son of the Rebbe the Tzemach Tzedek. This siddur was printed in 5673 (1913) in Berditchev, and from then on it was unobtainable until 5751 (1991), when it was printed a second time, the book "Siddur MaHaRID," of the Rebbe Rabbi Yitzchak DovBer of Liadi.
Let us continue to the next son, the fourth son of the Rebbe the Tzemach Tzedek. The fourth, the honorable holy Rebbe, Rabbi Yisrael Noach of Nizhin. This son is known by the well-known acronym Maharin, the son of the Rebbe the Tzemach Tzedek. And then his descendants are brought. His sons are mentioned here in sequence, five sons. But in practice he was married twice, and he has descendants from a first marriage and from a second marriage. Here they all appear together, even though some are from the first marriage and some are from the second marriage.
The first marriage of the MaHaRIN, Rabbi Yisrael Noach, was to a Rebbetzin named Freida, a granddaughter of the Mitteler Rebbe. Who were his sons from his first marriage? The first was "his son, the honorable holy one, the Rav the Chassid Rabbi Avraham," Rabbi Avraham Schneersohn of Kishinev. His special lineage, in addition to being the son of the MaHaRIN—that is, the grandson of the Rebbe the Tzemach Tzedek—was that he was the father-in-law of the Rebbe the Rayatz. The Rebbetzin of the Rebbe the Rayatz was his daughter. He was born on the 11th of Sivan 5588 in Lubavitch, and passed away in Kishinev on the 9th of Cheshvan 5638.
The Rebbe Rashab, who was his cousin, said of him that "one can learn the trait of humility from him." When his father, the Maharin, the Rebbe of Nizhin, passed away, he did not want to accept any leadership, and did not want to fill his father's place. He officially engaged in commerce, although his nights were devoted to Torah and avodah.
He is mentioned in one of the Rebbe's ma'amarim, in the famous ma'amar Lecha Dodi 5714. In a note the Rebbe brings a story, that the Rebbe Rayatz once traveled to his father-in-law, Rav Avraham of Kishinev, and asked him to repeat the words of his father, the words of the Rebbe Rashab, and he told him the expression "open the faucet and it will begin to pour out." And there is a continuation there, that he repeated before him a ma'amar he had heard from his father, and even though his father said about a certain thing "b'derech efshar" (by way of possibility), he said it plainly. Afterward he said to his father that "what by you is b'derech efshar, by me it is plain." This is the same Rabbi Avraham who is mentioned here, the son of the Maharin.
His second son, the chasidic Rabbi Shmuel Ber, lived in Surazh. All the following sons who are mentioned are from a second marriage. It is not mentioned here that the Maharin also had three daughters from the first marriage: one daughter, the Rebbetzin Sheina, the second daughter Perl Devorah, and the third daughter.
The following sons are from a second marriage. In his second marriage he was also married to another granddaughter of the Mitteler Rebbe, the Rebbetzin Chava Risha, and three sons were born from them. He mentions here (c) the Rav, the chassid, Reb Moishe; the next son (d) Reb Nachum; and the third son (e) Reb Yaakov. They also had a daughter, not mentioned here, whose name was Sterna, and she too was married to her cousin, to a brother of the Rebbe Rashab. So a brother of the Rebbe Rashab was married to a daughter of the Maharin, Reb Yisrael Noach. That is to say, we see many times that cousins would marry one another.
The next son, the fifth son of the Rebbe the Tzemach Tzedek, his honorable holiness the Admor Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak of Ovrutch. We have already told about him earlier as well. Now we mention his sons, three sons. His son a', the Rabbi the Gaon, the Rabbi the Chassid, Rabbi Shneur Zalman Mordechai of Zhitomir. It is written about him that he was a great illui (prodigy), and he was a rabbi in Zhitomir. He passed away on the 24th of Nissan 5626, truly in his youth.
The second son of Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak was the Rabbi and Chassid, Rabbi Aharon Orbutz, who lived together with his father in the same city. The third son, who also lived in the same place, was the righteous Rabbi, the Chassid, Rabbi Nachum Dov Ber Orbutz. We see that the third one has a different title than the previous two. Regarding the previous two it is written "the Rabbi and Gaon, the Rabbi and Chassid," while regarding him it is written "the righteous Rabbi," because he filled the place of his father in the Rebbeship in Orbutz. Therefore, it is written about him "the righteous Rabbi." He passed away on the eve of Pesach 5654.
Now, the daughters of Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak, the son of the Tzemach Tzedek. One daughter, Shaina Bracha, who was married to a Jew called the Gaon Rabbeinu Naftali Hirsch of Delitovka. And the second daughter of Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak, the Rebbetzin Sterna Sarah. The famous Rebbetzin Sterna Sarah, the Rebbetzin of the Rebbe the Rashab, was the daughter of Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak. Again, first cousins.
And the sixth son of the Rebbe the Tzemach Tzedek is the Rav, the chassid, Rav Yaakov, who lived in Orsha. We already explained about him that he passed away during the lifetime of the Rebbe the Tzemach Tzedek. He had one son, his son the Rav, the chassid, Rav Shneur. These are in fact the six sons of the Rebbe the Tzemach Tzedek that are mentioned here. There is a seventh son of the Rebbe the Tzemach Tzedek, the Rebbe Maharash, about whom we will speak, God willing, in the continuation of the chain of lineage, about the Rebbe Maharash.
