Sukkah, Chapter 4, Mishnah 4. This mishnah describes how the mitzvah of lulav was fulfilled in the Beis HaMikdash when the first day of Yom Tov fell on Shabbos - the only occasion on which the lulav was taken on Shabbos.
"Mitzvas lulav keitzad? Yom Tov harishon shel chag shechal lihyos b'Shabbos" - how is the mitzvah of lulav performed when the first day of Yom Tov of the festival falls on Shabbos?
On Shabbos it was impossible to carry the lulavim through Yerushalayim, since carrying was not permitted. A special procedure was therefore established for preparing everything in advance, on Erev Shabbos:
"Molich es lulavo l'Har HaBayis" - each person would bring his lulav and the other species to the Temple Mount while it was still Erev Shabbos.
"V'chazanim mekablin mehen v'sodrin osan al gav ha'itztaba" - the attendants appointed for this, who served in the Beis HaMikdash, would receive the species from the people and arrange them on the covered portico in the Beis HaMikdash.
"V'hazekeinim manichin es shelahen b'lishkah" - the elders could not be caught up in a place where such large crowds gathered, and needed a calmer and safer setting; they therefore placed their own lulav and esrog in the chamber designated for that purpose.
The condition of a gift:
"U'melamdim osam lomar: Kol mi shemagia lulavi b'yado harei hu lo b'matanah" - thousands of lulavim lay on the portico, and no one could know who would take his particular lulav the next day. Therefore everyone who deposited his lulav there was taught to say: whoever comes to have my lulav in his hand, it is his as a gift.
The reason for this: on the first day of Sukkos the lulav and the other species must belong to the one taking them personally, truly his own. This condition was therefore necessary, so that the lulav would be transferred as an outright gift to whoever received it into his hands.
Taking the lulav the next day and the enactment of the beis din:
"L'machar mashkimin u'va'in" - the next day, on Shabbos, they would rise early and come to the Beis HaMikdash.
"V'chazanim zorkin osam lifneihem" - the appointed attendants would throw the lulavim down in front of those who came.
"V'hen mechatfin u'makin ish es chaveiro" - and the people would snatch them up, to the point that they would strike one another. For this reason the elders refrained from taking part in this and turned to a safer place.
"U'k'shera'u beis din shebau lidei sakanah, hiskinu sheyehei kol echad v'echad notel b'veiso" - once the beis din saw that this was liable to lead to danger, they enacted that each and every person should take his own lulav and esrog in his home before coming to the Beis HaMikdash. From then on the people at large no longer fulfilled the mitzvah of lulav in the Beis HaMikdash.
In summary: in this mishnah we learned the procedure for taking the lulav in the Beis HaMikdash on the first day of Yom Tov that fell on Shabbos: bringing the lulavim to the Temple Mount while it was still day, the attendants arranging them on the portico, the elders placing their lulavim in the chamber, the condition of a gift designed to ensure that the lulav would belong to the one taking it on the first day, and finally the enactment of the beis din that each and every person should take his lulav at home because of the danger involved in the snatching.
