We now arrive at the third Mishnah of Maseches Gittin, in which the Mishnah teaches us what the essential body of the get is - that is, the core of the document and the wording without which it is not a get at all.
The Body of the Get:
The wording of the Mishnah: "Gufo shel get: Harei at muteres l'chol adam" - the body of the get is: "You are hereby permitted to any man." This is the wording written inside the get, and it is its essence.
The Opinion of Rabbi Yehudah:
Rabbi Yehudah adds that an additional phrase is also essential to the get and is considered part of its body. This phrase is quoted in the Mishnah in Aramaic, and its purpose is to make clear that the divorce takes effect through the get itself, and not by virtue of any statement or any other means. This is the wording, in translation:
"V'dein" - and this.
"D'hevei lichi minai" - that you should have from me.
"Sefer teiruchin" - a document of divorce.
"V'igeres shivukin" - and a letter of dismissal.
"V'get piturin" - and a bill of release.
"Lemehach lehisnasva l'chol gvar di titzb'yin" - to go and marry any man you wish.
It is interesting to note regarding the three terms used to describe the get - "sefer teiruchin," "igeres shivukin" and "get piturin": in the sefer Torah Sheleimah by Rav Menachem Kasher it is brought that these three Aramaic renderings are scattered among the various Targumim - one of them is found in Onkelos, the second in Targum Yonasan ben Uziel, and the third in a recently discovered manuscript of the Targum Yerushalmi.
The Body of a Document of Emancipation:
The Mishnah continues and teaches the body of a get shichrur, the document used to free a slave. Two versions were stated for it, and each one is valid to serve as the body of the document:
"Harei at bas chorin" - "You are hereby a free woman," when the document is given to a maidservant, who is from now on a free woman.
"Harei at atzmech" - "You belong to yourself," meaning that the slave now belongs to himself and is a free person.
In summary: In this Mishnah we learned that the body of the get is the phrase "Harei at muteres l'chol adam," and that according to Rabbi Yehudah the Aramaic addition is also required, clarifying that the divorce is effected by the power of the document itself. We also noted the three descriptions of the get that are scattered among the Targumim, and the two versions that constitute the body of a document of emancipation.
